Walmart is moving to end sales of handgun and short-barrel rifle ammunition.
With the decision, Walmart will focus solely on hunting rifles and related ammo.
Walmart officials also are requesting that customers not openly carry firearms in its stores, even in open-carry states.
"In a complex situation lacking a simple solution, we are trying to take constructive steps to reduce the risk that events like these will happen again," Walmart CEO Doug McMillon said in a memo to employees. "The status quo is unacceptable."
The announcement follows the recent mass shooting in Odessa, Texas, and back-to-back shootings last month, one of which was at a Walmart store.
