Walmart to open its delivery service to other retailers

Posted online

Walmart Inc. plans to open its delivery service, Spark Driver, to other businesses through Walmart GoLocal.

The move will allow drivers, who are part of the gig economy, to make additional deliveries along with Walmart purchases.

Walmart GoLocal will add more paying pickup and drop-offs while drivers are making Walmart deliveries. The last-mile delivery platform is similar to Shipt, which is owned by Walmart rival Target.

Last-mile delivery, which gets purchased items to their final destination, is typically the domain of FedEx Corp., United Parcel Service Inc. and the U.S. Postal Service.

Walmart GoLocal is just the latest effort by a major retailer to provide speedier delivery options. Amazon.com Inc. offers same-day delivery on 3 million items in select areas, while Target’s Shipt offers same-day deliveries from its stores and others. Similarly, DoorDash Inc., Instacart and Uber Technologies Inc. serve multiple merchants with gig workers.
