Walmart targets November opening for Springfield fuel stations

Bentonville, Arkansas-based Walmart Inc. (NYSE: WMT) is adding fuel options in Springfield, with work underway toward a projected opening later this year for two stations.

Mark Rickel, director of corporate communications for Walmart, said via email that one fuel station apiece is being constructed at 3245 S. Campbell Ave. and 3536 Mount Vernon St., along West Bypass, to serve a Supercenter store and Neighborhood Market, respectively. Both are expected to open in mid to late November, he said.

Rickel said the Supercenter fuel center would have a larger footprint that would provide walk-in services for customers. The Neighborhood Market fuel center would have a walk-up window.

"Walmart is always seeking ways to improve our customers’ experience and offer them the products they want, where they want them. These locations align with that strategy," a statement provided by Rickel reads.

He said he did not have information available on the costs and the construction-industry firms involved with the projects.

The fuel stations will be the first for Walmart in Springfield, according to Rickel.

Both Springfield locations of Sam's Club, owned by Walmart, have fuel stations. Walmart has 11 stores in Springfield, according to its website.

Walmart is reportedly opening 45 new or remodeled fuel stations in 34 states this year, according to Southern Living.
