Wal-Mart to spend $1B to raise U.S. wages this year

Some Wal-Mart workers might soon be able to afford shopping at Wal-Mart.
 
Reuters reports that the world's largest retailer and largest private-sector employer in the U.S. is increasing pay to about 40 percent of its workforce. Hourly full-time and part-time workers will earn at least $9 an hour; the rate goes to $10 an hour by February 2016.
 
Wal-Mart has long been criticized for paying low wages and low or no benefits. Labor groups and activists have called on Wal-Mart to pay its workers at least $15 an hour, according to the report.
