This general merchandise Wal-Mart store is being converted into Springfield's fourth Supercenter. Its grand opening is set for May 22.
The 65,000-square-foot addition will create a total of 170,000 square feet and 36 departments.
The store's co-manager, Beth Runyan, said it will have a full-line grocery department including fresh produce, bakery, deli and dairy.
The project's general contractor is Little Rock, Ark.-based Progressive Constructors Inc., and the architect is Perry L. Butcher of Rogers, Ark.
Project manager Greg Coker said the majority of PCI's work is for Wal-Mart.
According to Ralph Graham, district manager for Wal-Mart, it is one of the largest three-wall expansions Wal-Mart has ever done.
The building permit filed with the city in April 2001 reports the expansion to cost approximately $3.89 million, not including infill costs.
Wal-Mart spokesman Tom Williams said that last year the company planned on expanding 100 to 110 existing stores into supercenters nationwide.
