Wal-Mart sues Visa over chip transactions with debit cards

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. has filed suit against Visa Inc. for allowing chip-enabled debit card transactions to be verified with a signature instead of a PIN.

In the lawsuit, Wal-Mart claims Visa requires the retailer to accept signature-based transactions for chip debit cards. Wal-Mart officials say that's a less secure method of payment than using a PIN.

The lawsuit also claims signature-based transactions are more expensive to conduct over Visa's network.
