Hoping to overcome slow sales growth last December, Wal-Mart Stores Inc. started its holiday layaway program early.
The program launched Sept. 1, a day before it did last year. Customers can pay as little as $10 to reserve items worth at least $50.
Analysts estimate layways account for as much as 15 percent of Wal-Mart's holiday revenues in poorer areas of the country.
