Wal-Mart board adds Instagram CEO

Bentonville, Ark.-based retail giant Wal-Mart Stores Inc. appointed Kevin Systrom, CEO and co-founder of photo-sharing platform Instagram, as the newest member of its board of directors, according to Arkansas Business.

Systrom, 30, is the 15th member of the board and will be a member of the board’s Technology and eCommerce Committee and its Compensation, Nominating and Governance Committee.

Systrom comes on board as Wal-Mart looks to improve its mobile and e-commerce operations amid tough competition from other retailers, including Amazon. Instagram was founded in 2010 before it was acquired by Facebook in 2012 in a $1 billion deal.
