Wal-Mart apologizes for 'fat girl' costumes

Posted online
The nation’s largest retailer felt the full wrath of the Twitterverse Monday after the Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (NYSE: WMT) website made a Halloween costume faux pas.

CNN reports after a shopper stumbled across the category “Fat Girl Costumes," the Internet lit up with screen shots and angry tweets. Wal-Mart spent the better part of the morning apologizing.

@Walmart to @KristinSecorsky: This never should have been on our site. It is unacceptable, and we apologize. We worked quickly to remove this. -Jes

The retailer’s Twitter feed read like an apology letter stuck on repeat – and they neglected to use the official hashtag #fatgirlcostumes.

The category has since been removed.
