Wal-Mart, Amazon rolling out same-day deliveries

Posted online
As technology advances, American's attention span shrinks. In an age of instant gratification, retailers are struggling to keep up online with most shipping taking a standard three to five business days for delivery.

Not anymore.

Wal-Mart Store Inc. (NYSE: WMT) and Amazon.com Inc. (Nasdaq: AMZN) are rolling out same-day delivery services in select cities, using their own trucks for deliveries for everything from televisions to groceries and flip flops.

Arkansas Business reports Wal-Mart started its program in 2011 in San Fransisco and San Jose, Calif. In October, it expanded to Denver, where customers also have the option of sending online orders to the store and picking items up in the pharmacy drive-thru. There is a $5 to $7 fee for the service.

Amazon began Sunday delivers in November and plans to debut the program to most of the country in 2014.  The online retailer also offers same-day delivery Monday through Friday in 12 major cities around the country. In cities such as Phoenix and San Francisco, customers can order items as late as 12:15 p.m. and get their shipment later that day, according to Arkansas Business.
