VW plant's union vote could be breakthrough for labor

Posted online
When workers at a Volkswagen plant in Tennessee vote next week on whether to have union representation, they will do so with full support from their bosses. From politicians? Not so much.

Bloomberg reports the vote would create a “works council” to help resolve labor disputes and company decisions, on behalf of workers. Works councils are in place at every other VW plant, except for those in China. Volkswagen’s executives and management don’t fight against their workers organizing; in fact, they consider cooperation between management and labor to be a competitive advantage.

Republican politicians in Tennessee and D.C., however, object to allowing VW workers to organize, claiming that to allow that could cause the movement to spread to other Tennessee auto plants.
