Voters pass countywide sales tax

Posted online
About 11 percent, or 21,140, of Greene County voters turned up at the polls yesterday to pass a countywide 1/8-cent sales tax, which would fund law enforcement services in the county.

The measure, passed by 67 percent, or 14,086, of the votes, would add an additional 18 patrol deputies and six sheriff's detectives, and additional personnel in corrections, court security, the prosecutor's office and the juvenile office, according to the Springfield Area Chamber of Commerce, which had endorsed the issue. The tax, which is projected to generate $5 million a year, replaces a 1/8-cent countywide Park Sales Tax that expires in 2012.

The chamber's three recommendation's for the Springfield R-XII Board of Education also were chosen: Andy Hosmer with 10,031, or 28.7 percent, of the votes; Kristen Callen with 28.2, or 9,840, of the votes; and Bruce Renner with 9,519, or 27.2 percent. A fourth candidate, David Awbrey, who has worked in journalism and education, received 5,567 votes, or 15.9 percent. Callen is the ministries coordinator at Messiah Lutheran Church; Hosmer is an attorney at Hosmer King & Royce LLC; and Renner serves as a special education consultant at Missouri State University.

According to the election results from the Greene County clerk's office, Greg DeLong, financial adviser with Edward Jones Investments in Springfield, and Larry Snyder of Larry Snyder & Co. were chosen for six-year terms on the Ozarks Technical Community College Board of Trustees.

Voters also approved $8 million in general obligation bonds for the Republic R-III School District by 71 percent of the vote. The funds will be used to construct additional classrooms, an early childhood center and central office facility, and a transportation center. The bond issue, which also allows for renovations, repairs and improvements of existing facilities, is estimated not to change the adjusted debt service levy of the district - 84 cents per $100 of assessed valuation of real and personal property.
