Voters elect Springfield mayor, four council members

Springfield has a new mayor and four new City Council members after an election Tuesday that drew less than 9 percent of Greene County voters.
Overall voter turnout was 8.78 percent - 16,637 ballots out of 189,570 registered voters, according to the Greene County Clerk's office.
Jim O'Neal, president of O&S Trucking, took 7,200 votes, or 61 percent, to win the mayor's seat, versus Christopher Donegan's 4,609 votes, or 39 percent.
Bob Stephens won general council seat A with 5,770 votes, or 52 percent, versus Tom Martz's 5,260 votes, or 48 percent.
John Rush won general council seat B with 5,716 votes, or 51 percent, versus Fred Ellison's 5,504 votes, or 49 percent.
Nicholas Ibarra had 1,493 votes, or 68 percent, to represent Zone 1 on council, beating incumbent Denny Whayne, who had 700 votes, or 32 percent.
Scott Bailes, who ran unopposed, will represent Zone 4 on council after picking up 3,922 votes.
Remaining council members are Ralph Manley, Cindy Rushefsky, Doug Burlison and Dan Chiles; their terms expire in 2011. The new members will be instated at the April 20 council meeting.
Incumbents won the race for three spots on the Springfield R-XII School District: Bruce Renner had 28 percent of the vote, Andy Hosmer had 28 percent of the vote, and Kris Callen had 26 percent of the vote. Their challenger, Eric Jensen, received 18 percent of the vote.
