Vote in Oregon ruffles Monsanto's feathers

After spending nearly $400,000 in campaigns in Oregon, St. Louis-based Monsanto lost the fight against two ballot measures banning cultivation of genetically engineered crops, according to the St. Louis Business Journal.

Oregon voters in Jackson County and nearby Josephine County approved similar measures this week intended to protect the area's organic and conventional crops from contamination by genetically engineered crops, which are typically altered to withstand pesticides or resist insect damage, Reuters reports.

One of the measures, however, is expected to be challenged in court because it is not exempt from a 2013 law barring such GMO bans. Jackson County's effort, which passed by 66 percent and had drawn national media attention, was under way before that law and is thus exempt.
