Voices of Salute: Kim Beckham, Construction Specifications Institute

Posted online
The overall mission of the Construction Specifications Institute is to advance building information management and education of project teams to improve facility performance. The local chapter has about 70 members, including architects, engineers, contractors and suppliers. Among its annual events is a trade show that connects designers and contractors with area suppliers.

Industry role
CSI provides opportunities to earn continuing education credits and learn about construction products and processes. It also serves as a networking venue allowing members to take advantage of the knowledge base of the group.

We are working with area colleges to develop ways to encourage student participation.

Challenges
The economy the past few years has been particularly challenging for the construction industry, and unfortunately CSI is not immune. The camaraderie found at the meetings and events can be a breath of fresh air and an opportunity to feed from the group’s diverse membership for ideas and opportunities.

2011 accomplishments
This past year we hosted the CSI North Central Region annual conference in Branson at the Hilton Branson Convention Center. Attendees came from all over the Midwest, representing 22 chapters in Kansas, Missouri, Illinois and all of the states north to the Canadian border. The local CSI has a long-standing presence in our community, and in fact celebrated its 15th Anniversary this past year. Founding members were honored and thanked for providing a solid foundation.
