“We had 10 of our employees out there volunteering their time,” said Kristy Frisbee, director of sales and marketing for Varsity Contractors.
The volunteers worked at the shelter 8 a.m.-4 p.m.
“They did everything from removing wallpaper and repainting walls to cleaning the kitchen, changing out carpet, power-washing the patios and the garage areas, cleaning the restrooms and getting the unit ready for use,” Frisbee said.
The center plans to open its doors Oct. 1 in conjunction with National Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
Varsity Contractors is a nationwide company with 35 employees in the Springfield market.
According to Senior Vice President Robert Rayl, offering community support is part of the company’s culture.
“We want to give back to the communities we live and work in,” he said.
Each location chooses its own projects, Frisbee said. Locally, other community service projects have included doing work on a women’s shelter in Springfield and repairing, cleaning and landscaping an elderly person’s home.
