Utah to allow firing squads for executions

Posted online
Utah is bringing back the firing squad.

While lethal injection remains the primary method of execution, the state’s governor signed a bill Monday allowing the use of a firing squad if the necessary drugs cannot be obtained.

In recent months, states have had a hard time obtaining drugs used in lethal injection after many U.S. pharmacies quit producing the medicines, saying it goes against their Hippocratic Oath.

According to CNN, Utah banned death by firing squad in 2004, though inmates who chose that option before the law changed still ended up being shot to death.

The last execution by firing squad was in 2010, and it also was the most recent execution in Utah.
