Two U.S. Department of Agriculture research agencies are relocating to the greater Kansas City area.
The USDA expects $300 million in savings over 15 years from employment and rent as the agencies move from Washington, D.C.
Nearly 550 positions are coming with the Economic Research Service and the National Institute of Food and Agriculture.
Current employees, Democratic lawmakers and former USDA leaders have opposed the move, saying it would cut the organizations off from other federal agencies.
