USDA approves first vaccine for honeybees

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has approved the world's first vaccine for honeybees.

U.S. biotech company Dalan Animal Health's vaccine is designed to curb foulbrood, a disease caused by the bacterium Paenibacillus larvae that can weaken and kill hives. The vaccine initially will be available to commercial beekeepers.

"We are ready to change how we care for insects, impacting food production on a global scale," said Dalan Animal Health CEO Annette Kleiser.
