U.S. video game hardware sales rise on new consoles

The console wars are in full swing across the United States, and the latest battle is adding up to increased profits for both sides.

Hardware sales have consistently declined since October 2011, but Bloomberg reports sales increased to $1.33 billion from $839.1 million a year earlier, according to Port Washington, New York-based NPD Group Inc. Total industry sales rose 7.2 percent to $2.74 billion last month.

Microsoft Corp.'s (Nasdaq: MSFT) $499 Xbox One sold 2 million units globally since its Nov. 22 debut. The Sony Corp. (NYSE: SNE) PlayStation 4 has sold 2.1 million consoles since Nov. 15, despite its lower $399 price tag and earlier debut, Bloomberg reports.
