US sues Volkswagen over emissions scandal

The U.S. Justice Department yesterday filed suit against Volkswagen AG in the wake of the German company's emissions-cheating scandal.

In the civil lawsuit, the federal government is seeking as much as $18 billion in damages. The suit was filed by the Justice Department on behalf of the Environmental Protection Agency.

The suit involves allegations Volkswagen installed devices to dupe emissions tests in 580,000 diesel-powered vehicles sold in the U.S.
