U.S. Steel to lay off 176 in Granite City

U.S. Steel plans to shut down its aging Granite City, Ill., coke plant and lay off 176 employees.

Two coke ovens at its steel mill in the city are over 30 years old and no longer efficent, according to the St. Louis Business Journal. Coke is a type of fuel produced from distilling coal in an oven.

The Granite City layoffs are part of over 545 for the company.
