U.S. Steel Corp. is laying off 2,080 workers at its Granite City, Ill., plant in the greater St. Louis metropolitan area.

The move to temporarily idle operations at the Granite City plant is part of a consolidation of its North American flat-rolled operations, according to the St. Louis Business Journal.

The layoffs include 176 workers being let go as part of the company's plans to permanently shutter its Granite City coke plant, as announced in January.
