US sold $33B in weapons to Gulf countries last year

Posted online
New data from the U.S. Department of State show America sold $33 billion in weapons to Gulf Cooperation Council states in 2015.

Sales of weapons to U.S. allies – Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates – were sparked by the U.S-Iran nuclear accord and ongoing bombing campaigns in Iraq, Syria and Yemen, according to Fortune.

Sales of munitions are good news for defense contractors like Lockheed Martin, which received $18 million to increase its monthly production of Hellfire missiles.

Department of Defense spending on missiles increased 14 percent from 2015 to 2016 and is projected to increase another 7 percent based on the Pentagon’s fiscal 2017 budget.
