U.S. retail sales in March dropped by the biggest amount on record amid the coronavirus pandemic.
Sales were down 8.7% overall, according to Census Bureau data. Officials began keeping track of the data in 1992.
Excluding autos and gas, retail sales dipped by 3.1%. A standout was grocery store sales, which surged 26.7% in March.
