US oil exports: Coming soon?

The American shale oil boom has created a great supply of oil that sent Labor Day gas prices to their lowest level since 2004.

The U.S. passed a ban in 1975 on most exports of crude oil “on the heels of an OPEC oil embargo,” according to CNNMoney. This embargo made gas prices increase, which took a toll on the U.S. economy.

The ban was designed to prevent interruptions and protect domestic resources. If the ban is removed, would this send our prices back up? Experts say that's unlikely.

Environmentalists fear an outpouring of U.S. oil exports could create accidents and possibly more oil spills.
