U.S. Navy concerned about China's 'Great Wall of sand'

According to the commander of the U.S. Pacific Fleet, China is building a “Great Wall of sand” in the South China Sea, which raises eyebrows about the possibility of military confrontation in disputed waters, the Washington Post reports.

Described as an unparalleled program of land reclamation, satellite images show quick construction on various coral reefs and rocks controlled by China within the disputed Spratly Islands, including harbors and piers, helipads and one potential airstrip.

A total of 1.5 square miles of artificial land mass has been created, and the concern is that it could be used as a military outpost.
