US manufacturing jobs at 1940s levels

U.S. manufacturing jobs are at levels comparable to the 1940s.

While President Donald Trump has preached “buy American, hire American,” the United States added 26,000 factory jobs in February and 11,000 in March.

History’s biggest boom in manufacturing work was in the 1970s. Then, 19.5 million Americans worked in factories. Today, factories only see 12.4 million. In 2009, factory work hit a low of 11.5 million employees. Many factory jobs have been taken over by robotics. Data show that while output is at an all-time high for many, manufacturing remains subdued.

During President Barack Obama’s administration, most job gains came from service sectors like medicine, technology, retail and business.
