US layoffs rise in July

The pace of layoffs announced by U.S. companies rose in July for a second-straight month.

Employers announced they would cut a combined 45,346 jobs, a 19 percent increase in planned payroll reductions from June.

The energy sector accounted for 17,725 of the job cut announcements.
