US judge approves BP settlement for 2010 oil spill

Posted online
A U.S. judge gave final approval to BP’s civil settlement over the 2010 Gulf of Mexico oil spill.

The action comes roughly nine months after the company reached a deal to pay $18.7 billion in penalties to the U.S. government and five states, according to Fortune.

The agreement between BP, the U.S. Justice Department and five Gulf states stipulates the oil company will – over up to 18 years – pay a total of $12.7 billion in fines for violating the Clean Water Act and an additional $4.9 billion to Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas.

The explosion on BP drilling rig Deepwater Horizon killed 11 workers and was the worst offshore oil disaster in U.S. history.
