US household debt lands at $12.2T in 2015

U.S. household debt added $51 billion in the fourth quarter, according to a recently released quarterly report from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.

The addition brought total U.S. household debt in 2015 to $12.2 trillion. Per-capita debt nationwide was roughly $46,000 and California posted the highest in-state average at $65,150 per capita.

Mortgage debt made up nearly two-thirds of the national total, averaging about $31,500 per capita.

Student debt came in as the second place contributor among eight of the 11 states with the highest debt, except in Texas, Florida and Nevada, where auto loan debt tallied higher.
