US holiday retail sales grow 7.9%

Strong online sales and demand for furniture and women's apparel helped U.S. retail sales grow by 7.9 percent this holiday season.

That's according to a study by MasterCard Advisors SpendingPulse.

Comparatively, U.S. retail sales rose 5.5 percent in the period between Black Friday and Christmas Eve last year.

This year, online sales moved up 20 percent.
