The United States is facing a shortage of lifeguards, according to a report by The New York Times.
City officials and industry experts point to factors such as a low unemployment rate that has given young people plenty of job options. Also, a weak training pipeline was made worse due to swimming lessons and lifeguard courses often being suspended during the pandemic, according to the report.
“It’s the worst we’ve ever seen it,” said Bernard J. Fisher II, director of health and safety at the American Lifeguard Association.
