US consumers expected to spend record $5.9B on St. Patrick's Day

An annual survey by the National Retail Federation and Prosper Insights & Analytics found St. Patrick's Day spending could be big this year.

The firms estimate $5.9 billion in spending, up from $5.3 billion last year. It also would be the highest level in the survey’s 14-year history.

“The holiday falls on a Saturday this year, so Americans will have more time to splurge a little as they get together with friends and loved ones for a day of festivities," said NRF president and CEO Matthew Shay, in a statement.
