US consumer confidence index drops to pandemic-era low

U.S. consumer confidence was down to its lowest point since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, according to the latest reading from the Conference Board.

The Conference Board's consumer confidence index dropped 7.9 points to 86 in April. That's the lowest reading since May 2020.

Nearly a third of those surveyed project hiring will slow in the coming months.
