US coal mining surges

Coal production is up 19 percent so far this year in the United States, according to the Department of Energy.

It’s up by 6 percent in the United States, China and India, the world’s largest coal users.

Production through May in the three countries is up by at least 121 million tons compared with the same time a year earlier.
