US, China in Midwestern corn war

China is trying to steal corn from the Midwest.

That’s the claim in a New Republic story citing U.S. Department of Justice and FBI discoveries.

The pursuit of global food supply domination isn’t that far off. But first, China is addressing a food crisis. With corn consumption on the rise and expected to grow some 40 percent by 2023, China has been buying corn from American farmers by the million metric ton.

In short, they want to know the secrets to genetically modified hybrid corn, something U.S. seed companies do very well. The New Republic says it comes down to agricultural products serving as an asset and a weapon in a long-range geopolitical chess match.
