Commercial Street plans
Fund-raising efforts are under way for two high-profile projects on Commercial Street, and construction is ready to start on another.
Funds are being raised to establish a permanent facility to house a farmer's market at the foot of the Jefferson Avenue Footbridge. And renovation funds for the Commercial Club Community Center, at 299 E. Commercial, will get a boost as a result of the recent Beaux Arts Ball, held March 25 at Old Fire Station No. 2.
Meanwhile, construction is set to begin for the repair of the historic Jefferson Avenue Footbridge north of Commercial Street sometime in mid-April. It is estimated it will be complete by Christmas, according to the general contractor for the project, John Burk Construction.
The contract with the city of Springfield is for $400,965 and includes reworking the steel and replacing the rusted areas of the bridge, as well as adding more light fixtures and landscaping around the bridge.
