Atlanta-based United Parcel Service expects peak season daily volume to increase by 8 percent this year. The Atlanta Business Chronicle reports 34 million packages will be picked up by UPS globally during its peak day, Dec. 16.
The National Retail Federation predicts U.S. holiday sales to increase by 3.9 percent, and with a continuing consumer shift to e-commerce, there will be higher demand for shipping.
For UPS, five delivery days within 2013 surpassed the peak day in 2012. The company plans to hire 55,000 seasonal employees nationally to contend with the holiday season that includes six fewer days than last year.
