UPDATED: MoDOT cancels Republic meeting

Posted online
A Missouri Department of Transportation meeting scheduled for tonight about widening the intersection outside a new Republic High School has been canceled.

The meeting was set to take place at the existing high school, 688 E. Hines St., but the Republic School District is working to recover from damage done during the overnight storms.

The meeting will be rescheduled, MoDOT said today.

The $1.7 million project will widen the Greene County Route M/ZZ intersection and add traffic signals and turn lanes into the new school, according to a MoDOT news release.

Costs for the project, to be built in 2009, will be shared between the city of Republic, the school district and MoDOT, the release said. Republic school officials worked closely with MoDOT, city, Greene County and Ozarks Transportation Organization officials in selecting a site for the new high school and coordinating the school’s traffic flow needs with the existing roadways.

MoDOT District Engineer Kirk Juranas said the Republic district’s forward-looking approach will result in greater safety for students and their families and will save district taxpayers money in the long run.

“We encourage all school districts to contact us early in their planning process so we can jointly work out access issues,” Juranas said.

The project will:

• build left-turn and right-turn lanes on Route ZZ into the entrance to the school on the southeast corner of Route M/ZZ. The entrance will be about 1,100 feet south of Route M;

• build an eastbound right-turn lane on Route M into the school entrance about 1,300 feet east of Route ZZ;

• build left-turn and right-turn lanes at the Route M/ZZ intersection; and

• install traffic signals at the Route M/ZZ intersection.

A construction contract for the Route M/ZZ work is scheduled to be awarded in February 2009, with completion in the summer.[[In-content Ad]]
