Untangled Web: Weekend's only shuttering

Missouri has a show business problem, and legislators in Jefferson City again are looking to make a correction.

A Senate committee last month heard proposals from both sides of the aisle to implement tax credits for television and film projects shot in the Show-Me State, according to media reports. It’s not the first time such legislation has been considered.

The credits proposed could range 20%-25%, with companies eligible to receive an additional 5% in credits if the majority of the production is filmed in Missouri or if local workers are hired. The credits of up to 30% would go toward covering the film companies’ expenses while working on the projects in Missouri.

The problem is that while the plots of the movie “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” and TV show “Ozark," for example, are set in Missouri, the scenes are largely filmed in other states.

The reason is largely due to tax credits. Other states have them, so Missouri gets left out in the cold, even when the production in question bears names from our state.

Legislation in favor of these tax credits could boost Hollywood filmmaking inside Missouri, creating an economic impact on workforce and tourism.

Closing a coverage gap: Weekend’s Only to shutter

[Katelyn Egger | SBJ]

I gave this bit of news the old college try, to no avail.

I first saw in regional news coverage late last year that the Weekend’s Only furniture store chain was closing. Media reports at the time cited a press release that, despite multiple attempts to secure, I’ve never seen. The press release cited in news articles indicated owner Tom Phillips’ retirement was the primary factor.

This one fell in an odd gap for me, as I did not want to cite a press release from other media publications in our reporting for the SBJ Daily Update without verifying it myself. I also did not want to run a Today in Business e-newsletter summary from another publication since I was still chasing the item for the Daily Update, so I found myself in a coverage hole. I suspect the pending closure would take focus for the company and that a single reporter’s request might go unnoticed.

So, here it is.

“After 25 years, Weekend’s Only is going out of business forever,” a narrator states at the end of a video recently posted to the Weekend’s Only website about the pending closure.

A liquidation sale is on now – though the length was not stated – and the business at 3850 S. Campbell Ave. afterward will cease to exist.

There lies an opportunity for a potential tenant of some 63,000 square feet that Weekend’s Only occupied since 2021 and previously housed Vatterott College.

Until then, expect furniture to fly off the shelves at reduced prices.
