The University of Missouri paid $16.2 million in a settlement involving knee surgeries.
Lawsuits had alleged BioJoint surgeries pioneered by two university employees, orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Stannard and veterinarian Dr. James Cook, were falsely advertised.
According to court documents, the surgeries allegedly were “experimental” and “unproven” and sometimes left patients needing follow-up surgeries.
