University of Chicago donors sue to revoke $100M gift

Posted online

The Pearson Family Members Foundation filed suit against the University of Chicago to revoke a $100 million pledge made in 2015.

The foundation, led by Thomas Pearson and his brother Timothy Pearson, wants the $22.9 million it has already given to the school to establish a center for finding new ways to resolve global conflicts.

The donors claim university officials are not using the donation for its intended purpose. For example, the suit claims the school hasn't hired a full-time daily director to oversee the institute and hasn't developed curriculum, among other alleged shortcomings.

University officials called the suit "baseless." They say the Harris School of Public Policy is doing well with 12 courses offered in the 2017-18 academic year.
