United Way of the Ozarks prepares for Day of Caring

The 10th annual United Way Day of Caring will begin with a kickoff breakfast Aug. 14 at the ARC of the Ozarks, 1501 E. Pythian. |ret||ret||tab|

Marisa DeClue, communications associate for United Way of the Ozarks, said the organization is expecting 1,400 volunteers from about 80 companies. Volunteers will be working on 162 projects for United Way agencies.|ret||ret||tab|

"Agencies just turn those in, based on their needs. I don't think that we've really turned anyone down for a project," she said. |ret||ret||tab|

Organizations can request help with multiple projects, DeClue added. |ret||ret||tab|

"We have some agencies that are looking at 20-plus projects."|ret||ret||tab|

Seeking volunteers to help with yard work is a popular request, DeClue said, along with painting and cleaning.|ret||ret||tab|

"A lot of the places have big furniture that they have to have moved and cleaned underneath, and they don't have the manpower to do that," she said. |ret||ret||tab|

According to its Web site, the mission of the United Way "is to increase understanding of human needs and to mobilize resources to meet these needs." |ret||ret||tab|

The United Way of the Ozarks accomplishes this by:|ret||ret||tab|

providing leadership to identify and solve community problems;|ret||ret||tab|

developing and allocation resources to meet community human-service needs;|ret||ret||tab|

providing assistance to strengthen the health and human service delivery system; and|ret||ret||tab|

enhancing communications to foster meaningful involvement with donors and volunteers.|ret||ret||tab|

The United Way of the Ozarks provides funding for 27 affiliated member agencies in the area. |ret||ret||tab|
