United Way of the Ozarks hit its $3.5 million fundraising goal for the 2009 campaign, according to an announcement at a Nov. 18 campaign celebration.
United Way of the Ozarks President and CEO Jennifer Kennally noted that the total raised is an increase of $56,000, or 1.7 percent, from the 2008 total.
"As we all know, the uncertainty of the economic environment was a factor that we weren't sure what affect it would have on this year's efforts," said Maurice Henry, senior vice president of Associated Wholesale Grocers and 2009 campaign chairman, in a news release. "But once again, the people in this community have recognized the needs and come through for those men, women and children who need help and assistance."
Among the business fundraising highlights this year:
St. John's Health System donated $193,000;
City Utilities donated $168,000;
CoxHealth and Missouri State University each donated more than $100,000;
Old Missouri Bank donated $6,000, doubling its 2008 contribution;
Evangel University donated $17,700, up 22 percent from 2008; and
AWG raised $89,000, up 39 percent, due in part to nearly $40,000 raised from the in-office golf tournament.
