United Continental Holdings Inc. CEO Jeff Smisek and two top lieutenants stepped down as the result of a federal investigation into the airline’s relationship with the former chairman of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.
The probe, which began more than a year ago, centers on whether former Port Authority Chairman David Samson used his position to garner favorable treatment or personal benefit from United, according to the Wall Street Journal.
Smisek, who also is leaving his leadership position on United's board of directors, become CEO when the company was formed in a 2010 merger.
Oscar Munoz, president and chief operating officer of railroad operator CSX Corp., was named United’s new president and CEO.
