Unions representing workers at chicken processing plants in six states sued the U.S. Department of Agriculture this week.
The United Food and Commercial Workers International Union and local unions representing 10 plants in states including Missouri filed suit over a USDA policy that allows companies to slaughter birds more quickly. The unions allege the practice endangers workers and makes it easier for the coronavirus to spread.
The National Chicken Council, a poultry industry trade group, successfully petitioned for increased speeds in 2018.
