Unemployment rate rises again in Springfield metro area

The Springfield metropolitan statistical area posted another increase in its unemployment rate.

The June jobless rate was 4%, up from 3.5% in May, according to a news release. May's rate was up from 3.1% in April for the five-county Springfield MSA comprising Greene, Christian, Webster, Polk and Dallas counties.

All of Missouri's eight metro areas posted unemployment rate increases in June:
• Jefferson City, 3.5%, up from 3.2% in May;
• Columbia, 3.6%, up from 3.1%;
• Springfield, 4%, up from 3.5%;
• St. Joseph, 4.3%, up from 3.6%;
• Cape Girardeau, 4.5%, up from 3.8%;
• Joplin, 4.5%, up from 4%;
• St. Louis, 5.3%, up from 4.6%; and
• Kansas City, 5.4%, up from 5%.

Missouri's unemployment rate in June was 5.1%, an increase from 4.7% in May, according to the BLS. The data is not seasonally adjusted.

Nationally, compared with the same month a year earlier, June unemployment rates were lower in 386 of the 389 metro areas measured by the BLS. The Springfield MSA's June 2020 unemployment rate was 7.5%.
