UMB hires banking veteran Wilson

Longtime financial industry veteran John Wilson on March 27 joined UMB Bank in Springfield as its senior vice president-commercial banking, a newly created position designed to manage existing customers and recruit new relationships.

Wilson is working out of Kansas City-based UMB Financial Corp.'s 1150 E. Battlefield Road branch, one of its two locations in Springfield.

"UMB is very strong financially. We have a very deep capital base and a strong equity position," Wilson said of reasons he joined the bank, which he approached for a position. "There is a strong and consistent financial presence at the company."

The publicly traded company (Nasdaq: UMBF) recorded $106.5 million in 2011 year-end profits, the first time the company surpassed $100 million in net income. During the fourth quarter, UMB's earnings were $23.3 million, a 22.3 percent uptick from $19 million in the same quarter of 2010.

"We've enjoyed good growth and bringing John on to the team positions us for even greater future success," said Ann Marie Baker, president of UMB Bank’s southwest Missouri region.

Wilson previously served as south central Missouri president for U.S. Bank, where he worked for nearly a decade. "I had 10 very good years with the company. It's full of very hardworking people. I just found it was time for change," Wilson said.

Following his August resignation, Wilson created JSW Consulting, which he has since shut down, and he was named chairman of the executive committee for the Springfield Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors.

Wilson said the chamber position, which requires five to 10 hours of his time per week, wouldn't interfere with his job at UMB. Baker, who was chairwoman of the chamber board's executive committee in 2007, said UMB welcomes its employees to perform community service.

"John being in this special position with the chamber this year at the highest level is very consistent with our culture and our wanting to give back to our community," Baker said.

Wilson has worked in the financial industry for nearly 33 years.
