UK prime minister announces resignation

U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced his resignation amid a mass exodus of senior lawmakers.

Johnson said he would stay on board as prime minister as a leadership contest is held to select his successor.

The prime minister has been accused of being too close to party donors, protecting supporters from bullying and corruption allegations, and misleading Parliament about government office parties amid pandemic lockdown rules, The Associated Press reports.
